I’d spent the last 4 days wandering around the abandoned city of Pripyat, documenting the remaining buildings and artefacts. If you’ve been living under a stone and don’t know what Pripyat is then in 1986, there was a catastrophic accident at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant (CNPP). Pripyat was the city which was built for the workers of the Power Plant. I won’t go into details here about the accident, you can look it up on Wikipedia. Needless to say, the people that were evacuated were told to bring only what they needed for an overnight stay, everything else was left.
It was my last night in the Ukraine and we were staying in a high rise hotel close to the city centre. We spent the afternoon and early evening taking a walk around town, marvelling at how beautiful the women here were and how cheap the beer was! We got some dinner and despite the thought of having virtually no sleep, I was persuaded (peer pressured more like) into a night on the town. We rolled back into the hotel in the early hours of the morning. What did you think would happen putting a bunch of urban explorers in one of the tallest buildings in the area??? We headed straight for the roof of course! With a little bit of searching and dodging, we eventually found our way up and spent an hour or so getting pictures before trying to catch a couple of hours sleep before we had to prepare for our flight home.
